War Child at Liberation Music Festivals 2002
(WAR CHILD NL)
This year on May 5th, (the Dutch Liberation day), War Child Netherlands and Amnesty International were present at the Liberation Festivals in 13 cities all around the country. These two organisations are Offical Partner of the “ National Committee 4 and 5 May”. The theme of this year’s Festival is “Freedom listens accurately”. War Child has translated the theme to “Music Liberates”, because music plays a central role in the projects of War Child..

The theme was presented by the young Dutch star Sita and Mohammed Kiellow, a musician from Sierra Leone, who together visited four cities during the day, transported by a government helicopter.

Together with the thousands of people in the audience they sang a specially composed song of peace, which was broadcast on four different TV-channels in the country. In all the other cities War Child staff was present to provide information about War Child and its projects, and where children could paint their own T-shirts in the War Child tents. War Child also organised special workshops for children where music played a central role.

For more information see:the official website: www.4en5mei.nl or have a look at the special photo reportage at the dutch War Child website: www.warchild.nl.

Although our collective memories of the Second World War are gradually fading, the Second World War still represents a watershed in our history. It continues to occupy our thoughts and conversations, and remains a constant reminder of the fragility of civilisation and democracy.
