Child Rights Clubs in Northern Uganda Project

NEWS ARCHIVE

In Gulu district, northern Uganda, children are subjected daily to violations against their rights as a direct result of the 20- year conflict between the Lords Resistance Army (LRA) and the Ugandan Government.

The conflict has uprooted an estimated 1.7 million people (including some 935,000 children) into over 200 IDP settlements. As part of their Child Legal Defence Project, War Child Canada, and its national partner the Legal Aid Project- Ugandan Law Society, supports Child Rights Clubs in 14 schools for boys and girls between the ages of 14-17.

The objective of these clubs are to educate children on their rights while at the same time giving children an opportunity to discuss their own experiences and opinions on child rights. In addition, members of each club participate in music, dance and drama to illustrate the everyday challenges they face. By opening a dialogue at an early age, it is hoped that young people may be more willing to speak up about rights violations in the future. War Child Canada aims to support 30 Child Rights Clubs in Gulu District.
