Spotlight on Darfur region in Sudan

NEWS ARCHIVE

In January 2006 War Child Canada conducted project monitoring visits to Uganda, Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan and Darfur.

Over the last two years, the Darfur region of Sudan has been beset with violence resulting in the displacement of over 2 million civilians to camps around the state capitals.

Despite the recent escalation of violence in some of the project areas, including attacks on civilians and international aid workers, positive steps are being made towards revitalizing communities and supporting peace building. War Child Canada is still able to offer support to youth through the WCC/St. Vincent de Paul youth community centres located in two of the camps outside of El Geneina in West Darfur.

Literacy classes began in January in both centres with over 165 students currently enrolled and more joining daily. In addition, War Child Canada is providing support for recreational activities at the youth centres and to street children in El Geneina. Once the security situation stabilizes, full vocational training will re-commence.

War Child Canada requires urgently needed funds to continue to support this project in Sudan including funds to hire teachers and produce teaching materials. Please support this program by visiting www.warchild.ca/getinvolved_donate.com.
