On the 5th of May it was time for the annual Liberation Day Pop Festivals. In 13 cities in the Netherlands, o day of remembrance and of joy, Freedom was celebrated, in remembrance of the Liberation in 1945. The central theme of this year was: “Freedom is achieved together”. War Child translated this theme into: “why do thing difficultly if you can do things together?”
In post-conflict areas, children from different sides are often afraid of each other, avoid looking each other in the eyes and do not talk to each other. War Child tries to bring these children together, with different creative means like music.
At the big War Child stands in 13 cities the general public and visitors to the festivals could show their musicality with different musical instruments. With a few right directions this often cumulated into swinging musical spectacles. In this way people could experience how with music you can achieve things by working together. In a small way they have experienced how War Child brings children together and what the power of this methodology is.
Brace en Don Po Po
Ik the cities Assen, Groningen, Den Bosch and Roermond rapper and musician Brace acted as ambassador for War Child. Brace started his tour in Assen. The Colombian rapper Don Po Po was Brace’s special guest at all concerts, because as Brace himself said: “nobody can tell better why War Child’s work in Colombia is so important as my friend Don Po Po”. Together with the public Don Po Po and Brace composed a rap on the song of freedom. The audience could then propose words which the rappers should include in their lyrics.
The next concert was in Groningen. The audience in Groningen was already wild when the rappers arrived. Brace en Don Po Po gave a sizzling spectacle with a lot of energy and contact with the crowds. After this concert the tour continued to Den Bosch and Roermond.
Thanks to the great public the performances by Brace en Don Po Po on the 5 May Liberation Festivals was a great success.
“Bring these children back together again. Play with us!”!
