War Child Holland’s Child Soldiers report “The Shadow Of Their Existence“
Each year, 300,000 children worldwide are actively deployed in wars. By publishing this report, War Child wants to place child soldiers in the spotlight. The report provides insight into the situation in which they live and addresses the question of how and why they became child soldiers.
This report focuses on the plight of child soldiers in Colombia, which has been embroiled in a civil war for more than 50 years. The war receives only scant attention in the Western media, and sometimes seems to have been forgotten altogether.

A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier
A Long Way Gone is Ishmael Beah’s story of a childhood lost during the civil war in Sierra Leone. Written in his own words, it recounts how he survived what many would find hard to even imagine. Fleeing his village to escape rebel attacks, being coerced into joining the conflict, and being forced to commit heinous acts of violence.
This was Beah’s life for over three years until he was put into a child soldier rehabilitation program which gave him a chance to start making sense of his experience.
On the 21st of September, the Day of Peace, Ishmael Beah will be raising attention to the fate of childsoldiers worldwide together with War Child Holland in Amsterdam.
